Mechancal Proposal

Lab Space Depth Analysis

The lab spaces within ARIAD Pharmaceuticals currently use two fume hoods per bench. These fume hoods use 100% outdoor air and directly exhaust the contaminated air outdoors. The purpose of a fume hood is to avoid inhalation of hazardous materials. Reducing the two fume hoods down to one recirculating fume hood per bench could reap

environmental benefits as well as energy, space, and cost savings. As opposed to exhausting contaminated

air directly outdoors, a recirculating fume hood is designed to filter the air and then return it to the

immediate environment. The particulates that are trapped within the filter and deemed hazardous can be

safely disposed of. Since these fume hoods do not require being externally ducted, there is space to be

saved which can be used for other ductwork or piping. There are also energy and cost savings to be

considered due to the recirculation of air instead of the need to remove the air outdoors. While there would

require maintenance to change the filters, there is minimal installation required initially.

Office Space Depth Analysis

Currently, ARIAD Pharmaceuticals utilizes Variable Air Volume terminal boxes for their office spaces.

This type of system allows for a varying amount of airflow to be supplied at constant temperature. Although

fan speed does not operate at full capacity in a VAV system, the energy utilized by the fans accounts for

46% of the annual electricity consumption, as discussed in Technical Report 2.

Investigating the integration of chilled beams instead of the VAV terminal boxes (where appropriate) has potential to lead to a

number of savings within ARIAD. Since a chilled beam system would only require enough air to match

ventilation needs as well as the latent loads, lower air consumption would be one benefit to making this

change.

Construction Management Breadth Analysis

A construction management breadth study was done to see the savings on equipment first cost, as well as material savings after implementing the proposed mechanical changes.

Electrical Breadth Analysis

By redesigning the amount of fume hoods on the lab side, as well as the office spaces’ use of a VAV

system to a chilled beam system, a deeper look into the impact on the electrical distribution system will be

assessed.
